Step 11: Awareness, Connection, and Inner Guidance
Easier Ways & Underearning – Recovery Series with Randy Hyden
In this episode, Randy Hyden and I explore Step 11, a step that deepens awareness, connection, and our relationship with something greater than ourselves.
Under Earners Anonymous – Step 11
“Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood God, praying only for knowledge of God’s will for us
Easier Ways – Step 11
“We sought to improve our awareness and understanding of ourselves and the world through self-reflection and meditation.”
Deepening Awareness
Step 11 is where recovery becomes more than behavior change—it becomes awareness.
After developing daily honesty and self-reflection in Step 10, we now begin to deepen our connection to:
- Ourselves
- Others
- The world around us
- And whatever we understand as a higher power
This step invites us to slow down, listen, and become more present to life as it is.
Beyond Words: A Personal Experience
Randy shares that his understanding of “God” is not something easily defined. It is not something that can be fully explained through language or logic.
It is something that is experienced. Whether through prayer, meditation, or quiet reflection, Step 11 invites us into that experience—however we understand it.
For some, this may be spiritual. For others, it may be a deep sense of connection, intuition, or inner knowing.
From Thinking to Knowing
One of the key themes in this episode is the shift from intellectual understanding to felt awareness.
Randy describes this as moving beyond ego—the part of us that defines identity through thought—and into a deeper sense of interconnectedness.
In this space:
- We begin to see beyond separation
- We develop empathy without losing ourselves
- We recognize that our experiences are part of a larger whole
This awareness can bring a sense of peace, even in uncertain circumstances.
Practices That Support Awareness
Step 11 is supported by simple, consistent practices such as:
- Meditation
- Prayer or intention-setting
- Gratitude* Quiet reflection
- Observing thoughts without judgment
These practices are not about achieving perfection. They are about creating space to listen.
Understanding Ourselves and the World
In the Easier Ways framework, Step 11 expands beyond personal spirituality into understanding the world more clearly.
This includes:
- Recognizing how systems influence behavior
- Seeing patterns of trauma and conditioning
- Developing compassion for ourselves and others
- Letting go of the need to control or fight everything
With this awareness, we can begin to move through life with greater clarity and less reactivity.
Inner Prosperity
Randy introduces the idea of inner prosperity—a state of feeling safe, grounded, and at peace within ourselves.
This is not dependent on external success.
It is the result of:
- Self-awareness
- Acceptance
- Connection
- And trust in the process of life
From this place, we no longer need to perform or prove our worth.
Reflection Question
What practice in your life helps you slow down and listen—and what might you discover if you gave it more space?
All time spent watching this series and reading Randy Hyden’s Easier Ways book is creditable in the Living Library Time Bank.
Awareness doesn’t come from forcing answers.
It comes from creating space to listen.
