Step 10: Daily Awareness – Living in Honesty and Self-Forgiveness
Easier Ways & Underearning – Recovery Series with Randy Hyden
In this episode, Randy Hyden and I explore Step 10, where recovery becomes a daily practice of awareness, honesty, and continued growth.
Under Earners Anonymous – Step 10
“Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.”
Easier Ways – Step 10
“We continued to look for misconceptions in our beliefs, forgave ourselves each time we found one, and took a day-by-day inventory listing our reactions to unforeseen situations.”
Recovery as a Daily Practice
Step 10 is where recovery becomes a way of life.
Rather than revisiting the steps only during moments of crisis, this step invites us into ongoing self-awareness—a daily practice of noticing our thoughts, reactions, and behaviors in real time.
This is not about perfection. It is about staying present and honest with ourselves.
Recognizing Misconceptions
Randy introduces a powerful reframe in this step:Instead of focusing on “what’s wrong with us,”we begin to look for misconceptions in our beliefs.
These misconceptions may show up as:
- Judgments about ourselves or others
- Stories we tell that aren’t grounded in fact
- Assumptions shaped by past experiences or trauma
- Patterns of thinking that no longer serve us
By identifying these misconceptions, we gain clarity—and with clarity comes freedom.
The Practice of Self-Forgiveness
A key part of Step 10 is learning to forgive ourselves in the moment.
When we notice a reaction, a judgment, or a mistake, we don’t need to spiral into shame. Instead, we can:
- Acknowledge it
- Understand it
- Forgive it
- Adjust moving forward
This practice allows growth without self-condemnation.
Facts, Judgments, and Feelings
In this episode, we explore a practical tool for self-awareness:
Separating:
- Facts (what actually happened)
- Judgments (the story we tell about it)
- Feelings (our emotional response)
This simple distinction can transform how we process experiences, helping us respond with clarity rather than react from old patterns.
Spot It, You Got It
Randy shares a common recovery insight:What we notice in others often reflects something within ourselves.
This doesn’t mean we are the same as others, but it does invite us to look inward:
- What is being triggered?
- What belief is underneath this reaction?
- What can I learn about myself here?
This level of awareness turns everyday interactions into opportunities for growth.
A Day-by-Day Inventory
Step 10 is about staying current.
Instead of letting resentment or misunderstanding build over time, we check in regularly:
- How did I respond today?
- Where did I act in alignment?
- Where did I react from fear or misconception?
- What can I acknowledge and release?
This daily inventory helps us maintain emotional clarity and prevent old patterns from taking hold.
Reflection Question
What is one reaction you had recently—and what might be the difference between the facts, the story you told yourself, and the feeling that followed?
All time spent watching this series and reading Randy Hyden’s Easier Ways book is creditable in the Living Library Time Bank.
Growth doesn’t happen all at once.It happens in the small moments where we choose awareness over reaction.
