All Sides of the Story

Living Library Series, Episode 22:

(Warning: Some coarse language.)

This week Mike Shoeman had the joy of joining Andrea Askowitz, host of Writing Class Radio, for a one-hour conversation inspired by her project All Sides of the Story — a live storytelling series where eight storytellers share life stories from all sides of the political spectrum.

Andrea’s intention for All Sides of the Story is simple and powerful: “While we might not agree, it’s difficult to hate someone when you know their story.”

That vision deeply resonates with the spirit of The Living Library — a practice of generous listening, where we create space not for debate or persuasion, but for witnessing what is most important to the one who is speaking.

In this conversation, Andrea stepped into the role of the Book, and Mike served as Reader. Together, we explored how story, presence, and curiosity can bridge difference — not by erasing it, but by holding it with compassion.

Projects like All Sides of the Story remind us that the art of the question, the courage to listen, and the willingness to be seen are all part of the same journey toward understanding.
